North Campus Deans’ MLK Spirit Awards

The MLK Spirit Award for Faculty & Postdocs recognizes North Campus faculty and postdocs whose scholarship, teaching, and/or service exemplify the leadership and vision of Dr. King. Nominees may lead or inspire students, colleagues, and the broader community to develop and utilize their talents to advance social justice. We encourage nominators to think about the nominee’s work, including within the context of the pandemic and our reignited sense of urgency to address root causes of social injustice.

In 100-300 words, your nomination should respond to the following questions:

• How has the faculty member/postdoc demonstrated their commitment to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion?
• What have they done to change the department, unit, or university culture to be more inclusive and equitable?
• How have they positively impacted the campus community or the wider community via U-M coursework, special projects, sponsoring independent study, research, or advising student organizations?
• What have they done outside of their role at U-M that may be creating social change?

All faculty and postdocs in the North Campus Community are eligible for this recognition.

Nominees may lead or inspire peers, faculty/staff, and the broader community to develop or utilize their talents to advance social justice. We encourage nominators to think about the nominee’s work, including within the context of the pandemic and our reignited sense of urgency to address root causes of social injustice.

In 100-300 words, your nomination should respond to the following questions:

• How has the student demonstrated their commitment to social justice, diversity, equity, and inclusion?
• What have they done to change the department, unit, or university culture to be more inclusive and equitable?
• How have they positively impacted the campus community or wider community via academic or extracurricular activities?
• What have they done outside of their role at U-M that may be creating social change?

All students in the North Campus Community are eligible for this recognition.

The MLK Spirit Award for student organizations recognizes North Campus student groups whose culture, values, and activities exemplify the leadership and vision of Dr. King. Nominees may lead or inspire peers, faculty/staff, and the broader community to develop or utilize their talents to advance social justice. We encourage nominators to think about the nominee’s work, including within the context of the pandemic and our reignited sense of urgency to address root causes of social injustice. 

In 100-300 words, your nomination should respond to the following questions:

• How has the student organization demonstrated its commitment to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion?
• What have they done to change the department, unit, or university culture to be more inclusive and equitable?
• How has it positively impacted the campus community or the wider community via outreach, education, special projects or student member development?
• What have they done outside of their role at U-M that may be creating social change? 

All registered student organizations are eligible for this recognition.
*Awards will be given to student organizations of 19 members or less and one student organization with 20 members or more.

We encourage nominators to think about the nominee’s work, including within the context of the pandemic and our reignited sense of urgency to seek social justice.

In 100-300 words, your nomination should respond to the following questions:

• How has the staff member demonstrated their commitment to social justice, diversity, equity and inclusion?
• What have they done to change the department, unit, or university culture to be more inclusive and equitable?
• How have they positively impacted the campus or wider community through their particular areas of work at U-M (advising, team-building, event planning, training, support, administration, hiring, communications, etc.)?
• What have they done outside of their role at U-M that may be creating social change? 

All staff members in the North Campus Community are eligible for this recognition.
